Miami Shores is the village where Biscayne Boulevard turns residential: a grid of tree-lined streets between the boulevard and the bay, a country club whose fairways run down to the water, and the kind of quiet that is hard to find fifteen minutes from the Design District.
The village sits along Biscayne Boulevard from about 87th Street north, the bay on its east side. The houses date from the 1920s through the 1950s, Mediterranean and mid-century, on lots with room for a pool, under old oaks and banyans. The streets nearest the water end at the bay, and the estates along them have docks on the channel.
The center of village life is the Miami Shores Country Club, a public golf course with its clubhouse on the bay, and the aquatic center beside it. NE 2nd Avenue has the village's own small row of shops and cafés, and the MiMo district begins just south along the boulevard: the restored 1950s motels and the restaurants that grew up around them.

Biscayne Boulevard runs straight south to the Design District, Wynwood and Downtown, fifteen to twenty minutes in normal traffic, and I-95 is a few minutes west for the airport, about twenty-five minutes. The beaches are over the water: North Beach and the Bal Harbour Shops by the 79th Street or Broad Causeway in about twenty minutes, South Beach closer to thirty-five.
A car is the practical choice here. The village itself is walkable, with NE 2nd Avenue a few blocks from most of the houses, but restaurants and shopping are mostly along the boulevard and in the districts to the south.

South Beach is about thirty-five minutes by car over the Julia Tuttle or 79th Street Causeway, the airport about twenty-five minutes by I-95, and the Design District and Wynwood fifteen minutes straight down Biscayne Boulevard.
From a bayfront villa with a dock, yes, depending on the boat's draft and the tide; the water behind the bay lots is shallow in places, so smaller boats and tenders work best.
