South Miami is the small city south of Coral Gables that calls itself the City of Pleasant Living, and means it: big lots under banyans and oaks, a walkable downtown on Sunset Drive, the University of Miami across the line, and the botanic gardens and the bay ten minutes east.
The city sits between Coral Gables to the north and Pinecrest to the south, US-1 and the Metrorail line running along its eastern edge. Downtown is Sunset Drive and the streets around it: restaurants, cafés and the Shops at Sunset Place. West of downtown the streets go residential fast, with houses on half-acre and larger lots under a canopy of old trees.
It is a neighborhood of people who live here year-round, which is what gives it its feel: quiet after dark, busy on Sunset Drive at dinner, and a short drive from almost everything in the southern half of Miami.

The airport by car is twenty minutes; South Beach is forty.
Sunset Drive and the university are walkable from the villas nearest downtown; for the rest a car is the sensible choice, and parking at the house is never a question.

Matheson Hammock, a calm lagoon beach on the bay, is ten minutes. The ocean beaches are farther: Key Biscayne about twenty-five minutes over the Rickenbacker Causeway, South Beach about forty.
